El Santuario Wall

SOUTHERN NEW MEXICO

This ancient wall and New Mexican apple tree are located in Southern New Mexico. The Santuario predates the US occupation of this area and final statehood of NM in 1912. The Spanish placed sanctuaries throughout this area in specific locations- Pueblos, river crossings, small towns. They brought with them many domesticated seeds and animals. Apple trees from Sevilla in Spain were among those seeds. Throughout New Mexico and specifically in Santuario’s, the genetic linage of those apple trees can be found in present living trees.
