GILBERT LAKE, TWO RIVERS WILDLIFE REFUGE, ILLINOIS.
Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge consists of five separate parcels of riverine bottomland wetlands, around the confluence of the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. These 8,501 acres are noted for the large population of Bald Eagles. This refuge is part of the Mark Twain Wildlife Refuge Complex (over 45,000 acres) and is managed by the US Fish and Wildlife. These refuges connect to large expanses of protected land further upriver, along the Mississippi Flyway - one of the world’s major routes for migrating waterfowl. Migrating birds, including waterfowl, shorebirds, and songbirds as well as important habitat for big-river fish and other native wildlife are protected within these refuges.
In early Spring, when the Illinois River water is high - field flooding and road ending trips put you into dense colorful wildflowers and crystal blue skies.
